French antique fashion print 08368: From the era of Scarlett O'Hara, this is an original French antique fashion print. This hand-colored, steel-cut engraving was created for the magazine, Le Miroir Parisien, August 1863. Printed in Paris by Mariton on good-quality paper, this print features two ladies in beautifully-trimmed day dresses. Two close-up views can be seen <HERE.> Le Miroir Parisien was sold to upper-class women to announce the latest fashions. The detailed engravings, which are blank on the back, were included with the magazine as suitable for framing. 7"W x 10.75"H.

08355: This is a beautifully-engraved, hand-tinted print from the famous Buffon series of natural history - designed by the well-known artist Edouard Travies and printed by Furne, Paris. This print depicts La grue (the crane), La cigogne (the stork) and L'oiseau royal (black-crowned crane.) Micro views can be seen <HERE> and <HERE> and <HERE.> The paper is thick and is an ivory color. The edges are slightly worn, but still perfect for framing. Overall very good condition, although some minor spotting. The "rainbow" colors in the background are caused by the scanner and do not appear on the original. 6 5/8"W x 10.5"H. Mid-19th century.

08711: This is an original 19C botanical print from the book entitled English Botany or Coloured Figures of British Plants, illustrated by the venerable James Sowerby. This is plate 2292 of a water lily, called "Nuphar Pumila or Least Water Lily. Overall good condition. There is some discoloration on the edges as can be seen in the picture, but it won't show once the print is matted and framed. 6.5"W x 10"H. From the Third Edition, ca. 1877

antique map of Paris 08595: Here is a steel engraved, hand-colored map of Paris from the 1886 illustrated atlas entitled "La France et ses colonies" by Vuillemin, Thuillier and Lacoste and under the direction of French cartographer and map publisher, Jules Migeon. Steel-cut engraving Paris and London
08614: This original steel engraving print is from the French version of "Portraits of the Principal Female Characters in the Waverly Novels" printed in London, Dublin and Paris in 1835; the Paris edition was by Rittner et Goupil. This finely-detailed engraving is by H. Cook after a design by Cattermole and depicts Edith Bellenden, a character in the Walter Scott novel entitled Old Mortality. 08600: This steel engraved, hand-colored plate is from the Dictionnaire universel d'histoire naturelle by Charles d'Orbigny, printed in 1849 by Renard et Martinet, Paris. This plate is number 14A in the Mammifières chapter, quadriped subsection and shows the Boeuf brachycere (ice age cattle genus) and the Bison (American bison.) French antique print from versailles

 In 1830, when Louis-Philippe became king of France, one of his first projects was to restore the palace of Versailles and to establish it as a national museum. The prints below, sold by subscription in the earliest days of the museum of Versailles, were found at a brocante, grouped with original folios that are dated 1837, 1838, 1839 and 1840. The steel-cut engravings, printed on heavy laid paper, depict famous French personalities from the 12th to the early 19th century. Each print has an associated  biography, in French, written by the famous historian, Théodose Burette. In 1842, the museum published a book using the pictures and biographies from the subscription series. Shown at the left is one of the folio covers; micro views can be seen <HERE> and <HERE.> Each Versailles museum engraving comes with its associated biographical sketch and will be shipped in a photo mailer. 08464: This print, from the museum at Versailles (see above), depicts a famous soldier from the French religious wars, Marshal Blaise de Montluc (1502-1577) The engraving was done by Langlois from the portrait of Montluc by Dutch painter, Henri Scheffer. 08462: This print, from the museum at Versailles (see above), depicts the dashing seventeenth century Frenchman nicknamed "War."  He was the Count Jean de Gassion (1609-1647) who became a Marshal of France when he was only 34 years old. He fought his first battle campaigns at the age of 12. At about age 40, he founded a chivalric order dedicated to the defense of ladies in distress or oppressed -  l'Écu Vert à la Dame Blanche. 08535: This charming 19th century steel-cut print is from the highly acclaimed French book entitled Les fleurs animées. The engravings were made from whimsical drawings by J.J. Grandville who depicted each flower as a lovely maiden. This one is the poppy, le pavot, who is pictured as an 18th century young woman, sprinkling poppy dust on scarabs, putting them to sleep. Passion Flower botanical print 08710: Here is an original hand-finished chromolithograph on heavy paper from the mid-1800s, depicting the passion flower plant and bloom. This print is from the horticultural journal called the Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe (Plants of the greenhouses and gardens of Europe) which was produced by the prestigious Horto van Houtteano nursery in Belgium.
The journal, which was produced in 23 volumes over a period of four decades, was used to illustrate the rare and beautiful plants they offered. This print is in overall good condition with some freckling. 6.5"W x 9.75"H.
